When the four satellite transmitter tagged birds left Norway in the end of August - beginning of September 1995, an exciting time started. Already from the first moment the birds had surprises to show.
It came as a big surprise that the four tagged birds flew straight east to the Kanin Peninsula at the outlet of the White Sea. The belief earlier was that they migrated south through Finland. The new information suggests that all "Norwegian" birds stage at the Kanin Peninsula.
The Peninsula is an enormous wetland area. Local hunters could tell that the Lesser White-fronted Goose was common here in the 1950s. After the staging site was discovered by "Project Lesser White-fronted Goose", has Russian authorities established a new nature reserve there. By this it is hoped to protect the few remaining birds from hunting. After approximately three weeks at the Kanin Peninsula the tagged birds split up and went in different directions.
