In 1987 the Norwegian Ornithological Society (NOF) started "Project Lesser White-fronted Goose". The intention was to survey the Norwegian Lesser White-fronted Goose population and find the causes for its disappearance.
During field work in summer time, the breeding areas and staging sites in Norway's northernmost counties were surveyed. Through this work much knowledge about biology and threats against the future for the Lesser White-fronted were gathered.
Since the project started, the work to save the Lesser White-fronted Goose from extinction has become more and more intense. While the knowledge has increased enormously, the population trend has been negative up to year 2000. It has since been stable.
