In recent years it has been developed miniature satellite transmitters that are small enough to be used on birds.
During spring and summer in 1995, four lesser white-fronted geese were equipped with such transmitters. These weigh only 40 grams and are attached as backpacks. The transmitters send their signals to space with a flexible interval of three to 10 days, and from the satellites the position data are sent further to a ground control station France (ARGOS). From Norway the researchers can connect to the French servers to get the data. Modern data technology has some really good uses!
