The Lesser White-fronted Goose stays in Norway only during summer time. It arrives to breed. In autumn, when the goslings can fly, the geese leave the country and migrate to the wintering areas much further south.
The breeding distribution was earlier widespread, from the northern parts of the Siberian taiga to the northern areas of Fennoscandia (Finland, Sweden and Norway).
Within the whole distribution area the species has decreased heavily. In Sweden the species is extinct as a natural occurring breeder. In Finland just some few pairs breed. Norway has today the main remaining breeding population
Knowledge about the Russian breeding populations is lacking or quite limited. Unfortunately also these populations seem to be decreasing fast.
Areas with wintering lesser white-fronted geese are found in south-eastern Europe, around the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The wintering areas are wetlands and steppe. Because of intensive farming these habitat types are decreasing.
