Dangerous migration
Over the Ural Mountains
Two of the birds flew in a southeast direction, passing over the Ural Mountains and down the Ob Valley. Here the signals from both birds disappeared.
Some weeks later the Russian Bird Ringing Central the leg ring from one of them. It was sent by a hunter that had shot the bird, without knowing
that he killed one of the few remaining lesser White-fronted geese. The other bird was also likely shot in this area. The birds were probably on their
way to northern Kazakhstan, where there are other very important staging areas for lessers on migration. Where these birds winter are not know in
detail, but some winter in Azerbaijan and some in Mesopotamia in Iraq.
